The 4th house in astrology is the house of home and roots: home, family, roots, your private life and emotional foundations. Its sign and any planets in it show how these themes play out in your life.
What the 4th house means
The 4th house sits at the very bottom of the chart, at the point called the IC (Imum Coeli). It is your foundation: the family you came from, the home you make, and the private self you show only to those closest to you.
Its sign often describes the atmosphere you grew up in and what you need a home to feel like. Planets here show what drives your need for belonging and security.
What the 4th house rules
- Home and where you live
- Family, parents and ancestry
- Your private inner life
- Emotional security and the end of things
Its natural sign is Cancer and its natural ruler is the Moon, which is why the 4th house shares many of Cancer's themes.
Planets in the 4th house
The Moon here makes home and family central; Saturn can point to early responsibility and a strong wish to build your own stable base; Uranus often brings moves or an unconventional idea of home.
An empty 4th house
An empty 4th house is common and does not mean a lack of family. Read the sign on the IC and where its ruler sits.
