Rising sign calculator: what is my rising sign?

What is my rising sign? Enter your birth date, time and place below and this free rising sign calculator finds it in seconds. Your rising sign — the Ascendant — is the degree of the zodiac that was climbing over the eastern horizon when you were born. It changes sign roughly every two hours, so it needs an exact birth time. Enter yours and it is calculated in seconds, free.

The Rising sign needs a birth time, because the Ascendant moves through a whole sign roughly every two hours.

Why the rising sign needs a birth time

The Earth turns once a day, and the zodiac appears to sweep across the horizon with it. A full sign passes the eastern horizon every two hours or so. A birth time that is out by a couple of hours therefore produces a different Ascendant, and a different Ascendant moves every house in the chart. This is the single placement where the recorded hour matters most.

What your Ascendant describes

The Ascendant is your interface with the world: the first impression you leave, the way you start things, the manner people describe when they talk about you rather than to you. It is not a mask and it is not less true than the Sun sign — most people recognise it the moment it is named, even if they never felt it described their core.

It also sets the frame of the whole chart. The first house begins at the Ascendant, the Midheaven is drawn from it, and every other house follows. Read the full guide to the rising sign for the twelve one-line meanings and the idea of a chart ruler.

If you don't know the exact time

A time recorded to the nearest fifteen minutes is usually enough. Where you are unsure, cast the chart for the earliest and the latest plausible time: if the Ascendant stays in the same sign across that range, the reading is safe. If it does not, you are one of the cases where the exact hour genuinely matters, and it is worth trying for a birth certificate or asking a parent before you rely on it.

How it is calculated here

Your birth place becomes coordinates and the correct local time zone for that date, then the intersection of the ecliptic with the eastern horizon is computed for that latitude and minute. That degree, converted to a sign, is your Ascendant. The same calculation powers the houses in the paid report.

All twelve rising signs

The Ascendant describes how you arrive in a room. Here is each one.

♈AriesMarch 21 – April 19

With Aries rising you come across as direct, awake and slightly impatient. People sense that you will not waste their time, which makes you easy to trust in a crisis and occasionally blunt in a quiet room. You walk into places first. Your growing edge is reading the room before you take it over, and letting other people's slower pace be a pace rather than a problem.

♉TaurusApril 20 – May 20

Taurus rising gives you a steady, warm presence that people relax around. You look unhurried even when you are not, and you rarely raise your voice to be taken seriously. There is a stubbornness in the first impression: people sense you cannot be pushed. Your growing edge is flexibility in small things, so that your steadiness reads as strength rather than as a wall.

♊GeminiMay 21 – June 20

Gemini rising makes you quick, curious and easy to talk to. People assume you are younger than you are, that you know everyone, and that you will have an opinion ready. You adapt to whoever you are with, which is a gift in new rooms and confusing when you want to be known for one thing. Your growing edge is letting people see the version of you that is not performing.

♋CancerJune 21 – July 22

Cancer rising gives you a soft, watchful first impression. People feel looked after in your company and often tell you things early. You read atmosphere before you speak, and you can appear shy in a new room while actually absorbing everything. Your growing edge is a boundary: warmth that comes with a clear no is warmth people can trust rather than test.

♌LeoJuly 23 – August 22

Leo rising makes you memorable. You take up space warmly, dress like yourself and usually end up as the person others describe when they tell a story about the evening. There is dignity in your first impression: people assume you do not do small. Your growing edge is sharing the spotlight without dimming, so your confidence makes the room bigger instead of smaller.

♍VirgoAugust 23 – September 22

Virgo rising gives you a composed, considered first impression. People assume you are competent, and they are usually right, but they may also assume you are more certain than you feel. You observe before joining. Your growing edge is letting imperfection be visible early, because the trust you build through precision is smaller than the trust you build through honesty.

Questions

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

No, not reliably. Some sites will offer one anyway; it is a guess, and it is often two signs out.

How accurate must the birth time be?

Within about fifteen minutes is comfortable, except when the Ascendant sits near a sign boundary.

Does the rising sign change over life?

No. It is fixed at birth; what changes is how much of it you express.

Is my rising sign my chart ruler's sign?

No. The Ascendant's ruling planet is your chart ruler, and its position elsewhere in the chart is read alongside the Ascendant itself.
