What is a birth chart?

A birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a map of where the planets were at the moment and place you were born. That is the whole idea. Everything else in astrology is a way of reading that map: the signs describe how, the planets describe what, the houses describe where in life, and the angles describe the angle of approach.

A snapshot of a moving sky

The planets are always moving along the same apparent path across the sky, and they never repeat exactly the same configuration. That is why a birth chart feels personal: the arrangement of that particular minute is not repeated for anyone else. A chart is drawn as a circle with the zodiac wrapped around it and the twelve houses divided inside, so you can see at a glance which planet sat in which sign and which part of the sky.

Two people born a day apart share almost all their planetary signs and can still live very different lives, because the Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day and the Ascendant moves through the whole zodiac in twenty-four hours. The finer the birth data, the more specific the map.

The signs: how a planet expresses itself

The zodiac is a circle of 360 degrees divided into twelve signs of 30 degrees. Each sign is a style rather than a fate. Aries acts first, Taurus settles in, Gemini asks, Cancer protects, Leo performs, Virgo improves, Libra balances, Scorpio investigates, Sagittarius expands, Capricorn builds, Aquarius steps back, Pisces dissolves the boundary. When a planet sits in a sign, it behaves in that style.

Your Sun sign — the one a newspaper horoscope gives you — is the sign the Sun occupied on your birthday. It is genuinely important, and it is one twelfth of the picture. The big three calculator shows the other two most people care about in a few seconds.

The planets: what is being expressed

Each planet describes a function of the personality rather than a personality. The Sun is your direction and what you are becoming. The Moon is emotional need and habit. Mercury is how you think and speak. Venus is what you value, enjoy and find beautiful. Mars is drive, appetite and anger. Jupiter is growth and meaning. Saturn is structure, limit and time. Uranus is disruption and independence, Neptune is imagination and dissolution, Pluto is depth and compulsion. Chiron describes the sore place that becomes useful, and the lunar nodes describe a direction of growth rather than a fixed trait.

The houses: where it happens

The twelve houses divide the chart into areas of life: the first is the body and how you arrive, the second is what you own and earn, the third is communication and local world, the fourth is home and family, the fifth is play and creativity, the sixth is work and routine, the seventh is partnership, the eighth is intimacy and shared resources, the ninth is belief and travel, the tenth is public direction, the eleventh is community, the twelfth is retreat and the unconscious. A planet in the seventh does not change what the planet is; it changes where its business is.

The houses are calculated from the Ascendant, which is the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute and place of birth. This is the single most time-sensitive part of the whole chart, and the reason a birth time matters more than a birth date.

The angles: the frame of the chart

Four points anchor the wheel. The Ascendant, or Rising sign, is what is coming over the horizon; astrologers treat it as how you meet the world. The Descendant, opposite it, describes what you look for in another person. The Midheaven is the highest point, read as public direction and reputation. The Imum Coeli, opposite that, is home, roots and privacy. The Midheaven moves about one degree every four minutes, so a birth time off by twenty minutes can move it noticeably.

The aspects: how the parts talk to each other

Aspects are angles between planets. Conjunctions (0°), squares (90°) and oppositions (180°) describe tension, friction and the places where a life keeps returning. Trines (120°) and sextiles (60°) describe flow and ease. An aspect is not good or bad in itself: a chart of only trines tends to describe someone comfortable who does not change much, while a chart of squares describes someone who does.

Why the birth time changes everything below the surface

With a date but no time, the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and the outer planets keep their signs — they move too slowly to change in a day. What disappears is the Moon's exact degree, every house, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, and with them the ability to say where in life a planet operates. A reading without a time is not wrong, it is narrower. Guides to birth time often describe this as the difference between a description of character and a description of a life.

What a birth chart is not

A chart is not a prediction machine and not a verdict. It does not know your choices, your circumstances or the people you will meet. It describes tendencies, sensitivities and timing, in the same way a weather map describes pressure systems: the map is accurate, and what you do with your afternoon is still yours. It is not medical, psychological, legal or financial advice, and it should never be used to make a decision that belongs to a professional.

Getting your own chart

You need three things: the date, the time and the town. If you know all three, the big three calculator gives you Sun, Moon and Rising instantly, and the personalized birth chart report goes through the whole chart, the houses, your own questions and the year ahead. If you do not know your time, there is a version of a reading for that too.

Questions

Is a natal chart the same as a birth chart?

Yes. Natal chart, birth chart and horoscope chart all describe the same map of the sky at your birth; the words come from different traditions.

How accurate does my birth time need to be?

Within about ten minutes is comfortable for the Rising sign and the Midheaven. A time that is an hour out can change both, and with them every house.

Can two people have the same birth chart?

Only if they were born in the same place within a few minutes of each other. Twins share almost everything except the fast-moving Moon, the Ascendant and the exact house positions.

Do I need to believe in astrology for a chart to be useful?

No. Many people use a chart as a structured set of questions about their own patterns. It works as reflection whether or not you think the planets cause anything.

Where does the calculation come from?

Positions are computed astronomically for your exact birth moment, converted from your birth place's time zone on that date. Nothing in the calculation is an estimate except where the birth time itself is unknown, and that is stated plainly.
